Not a lot of people realise it, but like your car, your computer needs regular servicing. A computer is a collection of moving parts, and electronics, and has powerful fans which move a lot of air in and out, and along with this air, a great amount of dust and dirt. Tower style computers which generally sit at people's feet under their desks are very commonly so full of dust that the heat sink (the metal fin style heat exchanger which cools the processor, which is the main brains of the computer) is solid and allows the processor to get so hot it will cause severe burns if one was to touch it. Luckily, it's inside the computer so noone would actually touch it, but overheating processors are a leading cause in computer slowness, and freezing. Laptop computers and netbooks are commonly used in the living room, for internet browsing and work while watching tv, and a common practice is to put the laptop computer down on the carpet to go and make a cup of coffee, or even sit it on the floor overnight while still running. Think about it, a laptop is very thin, with not a lot of room for large heat exchangers, like you see on a tower drive, so they instead rely on powerful fans, and what do you think happens when you place a laptop or netbook on the floor with these powerful fans running? Simple... It sucks up dust out of the carpet, clogging the important cooling ducts and heat exchangers, causing the laptop to run hot, run slow, and wear out sooner than it should. There's also the software based servicing element, carrying out tasks like a disk defragment, disk cleanup, virus and spyware removal and registry cleaning and optimisation. By regularly servicing your computer (we recommend every 6 months) you'll get many years of happy, trouble-free computing, and extend the life of your computer far beyond what you'll get if you simply turn it on and use it for 2 years without giving it any attention. We have seen laptops give 5-7 years and desktops give 7-9 years of good performance with regular servicing, and have also seen laptops and desktops give as little as 2 years before dying when neglected. It's simple, you service your car to keep it running smoothly, give your computer the same respect, and it'll give you many years of happy, trouble free computing. |
